Was Allen Iverson Pity-Voted Into The Eastern Conference Glory Team?
Allen Iverson has played 16 games for the Philadelphia 76ers, averaging just 14.8 points, yet fans voted him to start in the NBA All-Star Game for the Eastern Conference. NBA fans get to vote for the five starters in each Conference in the game, and Iverson received 1,269,568 votes, second to only Miami's Dwyane Wade among guards in the East. Upon hearing the news, Allen Iverson sent the following press release:
"I just want to thank everybody for their support this season, and it's an honor that the fans have voted me into the All-Star Game as a starter," Iverson said in a statement released by the Sixers. "The fans are who make us, and make the NBA so popular. This year is even more special because I'll be representing a city and fans that I love, and a team that has been such a big part of my life throughout my career."
The question on every sports-fan's mind is:Does Allen Iverson deserve to be in the All-Star game? With only 14 points per game average - a whole dozen less than his career average points, aren't there more talented guards that can fill his position. And Allen Iverson gets a starting position, no less. Is it fair that the All-Star game, which is a celebration of the best NBA players in the league is reduced to a high-school popularity contest? Maybe the fans should have their voting rights revoked!

This article is another desperate attemt to disparage A.I. Allen has tried to distribute the ball evenly amongst his teamates. If he was averaging 28 points a game this season you would call him ball hog. Now he averages half of that and it is not good enough. Nothing he does can appease his negative crtics. Allen has been playing unselfish basketball and he still gets slammed for trying to be an upstanding teamate. I am so sick of all of you and your hatred for him. it is quite pathetic.

Its pretty stupid to ask the question about "fairness" when the fans (1,269,568 votes) selected him. Fans not only consider loyalty. They also consider fairness to the player; knowing that Iverson can still light it up, but so many have publicly torn him down that teams arean't even giving him a chance. Iverson always had that downside when he was lighting up the board; but he almost singlehandedly took the Sixers to the finals. It is Sixers ineptitude not to get better the following year; then to get rid of him the way they did. Fairness goes both ways. Let Inverson enjoy his fan support without the jealousy of so many.
