the whole "death panel" issue becomes an economic necessity when you begin using someone else's money to pay for health care. It is a way of allocating limited resources (money) in the most efficient way. If you want to pay for your 95 y old grandmother to get a $20,000 pacemaker - go for it!. If you want me to pay, then you bet I want someone to check out her "viability", because there may be a much better opportunity cost of using that money elsewhere. In essence, it shows that Obama realizes with socialized medicine, not everyone can get everything.

the whole "death panel" issue becomes an economic necessity when you begin using someone else's money to pay for health care. It is a way of allocating limited resources (money) in the most efficient way. If you want to pay for your 95 y old grandmother to get a $20,000 pacemaker - go for it!. If you want me to pay, then you bet I want someone to check out her "viability", because there may be a much better opportunity cost of using that money elsewhere. In essence, it shows that Obama realizes with socialized medicine, not everyone can get everything.

1) Wouldn't a "death panel" more accurately be described by (or to) a Christian as a "God panel" or a "Divinity panel," as it leaves the fate of the patient to "Divine intervention?"
2) How is the a panel making this decision under a government subsidized plan different from a panel (or individual) making this decision in a private company? Which happens every day in insurance companies when they deny coverage to people who have paid their premiums.
3) If a government subsidized "Divinity panel" says "you're not covered" then the individual can just go to the free market to get coverage. If the free market won't cover them, then what, exactly, did the government subsidized program take away from them?

Understand that Black Colleges were in place to serve Black people during a time of Segregation. Also, keep in mind that these schools was open to everyone from the time they open their doors. I went to a "Black College that opens its doors on July 4 1881. It was open to White, Black, Yellow, etc., in short, it was open to everyone. Meanwhile there was an insitution of higher learning about twenty miles to the northeast that was open only to "Whites." I hope this answers your question.

Decisions on coverage were made by the private provider that was contracted to provide the care (BC/BS) and based on the plan that I selected. If I wanted to buy more coverage, I was free to do so...either throught he government plan or outside of it. So the argument about the government making a decision is flawed...it is just not an issue unless you're on medicare, medicaid or go through the VA, and even then, you can go to the private sector (or charity) to get coverage. (The whole panel argument is irrelevant now, especially because the public option is off the table.)

Unfortunately, if you step back from the politics, Rush is correct. Haiti has experienced a historic disaster. Ask any first responder that has been in a disaster about having to triage victims. The one in charge of the triage has to make a quick decision on victim's chances of survival, a 'Death Panel' if you will.
It is a sad truth that not everyone in Haiti will be saved. There is neither the infrastructure, nor manpower to accomplish this. So somebody on the ground will have to decide who is worth trying to save and who is not appropriate to waste precious time and supplies on.
You may not like the messenger, but unfortunately the message will be a cold, hard reality that will only get worse as the days go on.

Seems to me every time you submit a request to your provider, their determining whether you need the services, and very often they reject the request so that the policy holder has to take it out of his or her pocket and mortgage the house...if they own a house. The insurance companies in this country make out better than loan sharks. You pay the premiums and for failure to read the fine print, you don't get the services very often needed for critical care. Best to have an attitude, of "I want "No Code!!!", I can't afford it anyway!"

Nothing makes better political fodder than a tragedy that kills 100,000 + people. Certainly, there must be better ways to make a shallow political point than to use a massive tragedy such as the one in Haiti. We have freedom of speech in this country, but our speech is not free. Rush may not lose any of his loyal fans from this comment, but he will further alienate moderates that the Republicans will need to gain any real political power. All of that said, the real point here is that some subjects should be handled with a little more respect. Bill Maher lost a job over comments about 9/11, and I don't think many people on the right or the left disagreed with that decision. Rush will keep his job, but his tone deaf comments will further alienate him from the majority of Americans.
