Mo'Nique Says She Can Relate To Her 'Precious' Character Because Of Her Sexual Abuse History
Mo'Nique is known for being a light-hearted comedienne, however, her new role as a psychotic mother who abuses her daughter turns that happy-go-lucky streak on its head. Mo'Nique recently told Ellen about her sexual abuse that allowed her to play that role:
"You know, I do know Mary Jones and its a story that I've told, and I was molested as a kid, by my oldest brother Gerald, so when Lee Daniels called me and told me about this movie, when I say action to you I need you to be a monster so I remembered those moments with my brother Gerald because he was a monster to me. and when he said action, I became a monster. In all fairness, and I haven't spoken to my brother in years, it allowed me not to hate him... because Mary Jones is mentally ill, it's a sickness, it's a illness, and even though she was very cruel and she was evil and mean when you really got to listen to this women, you saw that she was mentally ill and often times we throw it away... and to show mental illness like that and not in an institution and not in a straight jacket. That movie really allowed me to say no judgement because you really don't understand people's situation and circumstances."
That old saying about not judging a book by it's cover is so true, ain't it?
