It's about time someone puts down the "camera" and truly helps someone in need rather than filming/reporting it. Even if he's doing it for a publicity stunt, who cares? He's helping the injured! Shut up.

DimeWars Guest Says:
How can anyone critisize someone so qualified and compasionate as Dr.Gupta. When people need medical attention it is good to know that there is someone who puts others needs ahead of any journalistic job. It seems there are plenty of newspeople and not enough medical people there anyway!!!

DimeWars Guest Says:
WOW!I think you are jealous that 1 man can wear different hats and make it look so easy thank god for Dr.gupta and thank you Dr.gupta for being the person that you are!! Instead of critisizing him help someone in need and see how good it will make your heart feel.

jpotter Says:
1. There aren't more than a half-dozen "journalists" in the world who respect the line Mr. Steele refers to, with much more destructive results. I doubt Mr. Steele even knows what that line is, since he chooses Dr. Gupta as an example. Look around, sir. There are a lot better examples of the "ethics" problems you cite.

2. Dr. Gupta isn't a journalist. He's always served as a subject matter expert, and is doing exactly that in Haiti. The information he's bringing to us is not only making the disaster more real to people who can provide resources to help, but takes a lot more courage to deliver than sitting on the sidelines passing judgment. How about doing something to help instead?

Steele is an idiot. Dr. Gupta may be a journalist, but when he took that hippocratic oath his first priority became saving lives. I say to Bob Steele, the journalism values scholar at The Poynter Institute and journalism professor at DePauw University. Helping save someone life muddles the journalistic reporting? This Bob Steele should get a life. What would he said if Dr. Gupta would refuse to help dying individuals when need. He took an Oath to safe lives but did not. I praise Dr. Gupta he provided assistance when did. How would Mr. Steele feel if Dr. Gupta refused to give him medical attention if he was in an area with to are few doctors.

Bravo to Dr. Gupta, Anderson Cooper, and all the other journalists out there who know what humanity really is.
1/19/2010 5:54 PM
DimeWars Guest Says:
It is unfortunate that critics of Dr. Gupta do not spend more time critizing Fox news about their constant misstatement of the facts. It is a daily occurance at Fox news. Perhaps his critics should shut up about those helping the victims and start helping getting the news out about the incompetent U.N.
1/19/2010 6:02 PM
Mike Says:
Bob Steele, I have heard stupidity expressed in several languages over 61 years. But, I have never heard anything that left me so speechless. What did you do, trade your common sense and humanity for for a position that does no more than make you feel important? Get out there and help or shut up.
1/19/2010 6:24 PM

I went to DePauw. I am pretty sure that the university won't like taking one to the nuts on Mr. Steele's behalf. Glad I am not there to see the fallout.

There will be times where you got to be serious about the situation. As someone who had journalism as a minor, I certain concurred where Mr Steele is standing so you will have to take a stand in your moral ground especially whenever there is a life and death situation on hand. Juliadee Says:
While I don't have experience as a journalist, I am a medical professional. All medical professionals are bound by the idea of "this above all else, do no harm." Harm can be done by not doing anything but look through the "lens" of the camera. Regardless of your background or profession, the mere idea of judging a person who is on the front lines of a disaster situation is dispicable. By saying that a person who is a journalist can't help because it would take away from their objectivity is placing the job of journalism not in a position of status, but that of bottom feeder.
1/19/2010 6:44 PM
Guest Says:
Concerning the quote below by Bob Steele, the Poynter Institute's journalism values 'scholar' who complained that Gupta crosses the line between covering the story and participating in the story too often: "It clouds the lens in terms of the independent observation and reporting," the DePauw University journalism professor told the blog DimeWars... You've got to be kidding! Should a quailfied surgen/doctor NOT help in an emergency, no matter what other role or duties they might have? She he simply 'report' on the dying person, rather than save their life?!?
1/19/2010 6:45 PM
Sandra Says:
Thankyou Dr. Gupta for reminding us what the phrase "I am My Brother's Keeper" really means. It is a blessing to see that compassion takes precedence over reporting people dying when you could make a difference by saving a life. God Bless you Dr. Gupta for the goodness you have shown. Bob Steele I pray the LORD will give you a heart.
1/19/2010 6:53 PM
Ester Says:
Thank you Dr. Gupta, and all who are there reporting. We appreciate you, and I am personal;ly praying for you and all others. You are doing a good work. Don't even concern yourself about the absent minded professor. You truly are Dr. first. I'm a LPN long sinse retired, but I know the feeling of being in the midst of a tragic situation. I worked the polio epedemic long time ago. Keep going Doc, we're praying for you.
1/19/2010 6:55 PM
DimeWars Guest Says:
Dear Critic-The public is not so naive as to believe in 100% objectivity any more.
Further, compassion from a reporter only lends credibility. What an idiotic criticism-saying Gr Gupta crossed the line.

Q Says:
What crap! Since when has the press had a clear "lens in terms of the independent observation and reporting." Everybody knows that every reporter and every organ of the news media in this country and and the world have a bias. Never in the history of journalism in this country or the wolrd have journalists been unbiased. The all have their slant and it is invariably expressed in their reporting. Give us a break Bob Steele...!!!

That guy complaining about Dr. Gupta is a heartless, intellectual moron. He lives in his head. He would stand by and let humans die for some stupid intellectual reason. He disgusts me. I wonder how his wife would feel if Dr. Gupta was asked to help her and the Dr. said no.

aw, come on, bob steele. do you really think we the audience are all idiots who cannot distinguish between true journalists and "special correspondencts"? are you kidding? these doctors who serve as "journalists" are not bonafide journalists in the first place. duh??? i know what the difference is and my mind is very clear as to who they are when they "report". they are doctors, first and foremost. they are doing what they swore an oath to do and i would expect no less of them. your comments are well noted as they relate to bonafide journalists. perhaps it is YOU who is unable to distinguish between the two? journalists they are not. doctors they most certainly are. or, mr. steele: are you just being a bit anal for your own good?
1/19/2010 7:45 PM

The world should have more people like Dr. Gupta, he is a real hero. There is no room for critisism of any kind, he is doing what a doctor suppose to do, save lifes the journalism is secondary but it helps the journalism too because he knows the real facts of what is happening at the moment.
1/19/2010 7:54 PM
Bud Budlong Says:
Good for Dr Gupta!!! I previously criticized him for being in Haiti and NOT treating the injured. Journalists are not critical in a disaster - doctors are. Anyone who says a journalist-doctor should not treat the injured if a jerk.

Mark Says:
Bob Steele... I'm a Dr. Sanjay Gupta fan. I understand his dual role when he is out in the field and obviously you do not. All things are interconnected. There are no clear lines except in the rarified intellectual world of college professors who are not in touch with the real world. You're sitting in your little cubicle typing commentary so mediocre and sensationalistic that a ninth grader would be ashamed. Get off your duff and get into the real world. Get a life!

The reporters don't know a thing least of all being objective. I worked at a plcae that was robbed once and when I read the account in the newspaper I thought gee this must be a different robbery than where I worked cause the account was NOT THE REAL story. Same with Abby Hoffman & Jerry Rubin when they came to my college for a debate. The report was the college paper not evey a "REAL" paper so I take with a grain of salt EVERYTHING in the media of ANY form. And will NOT spend a dime to buy a "rag" Everyone is correct this man needs to be nothing but congradulated.

I am not a regular reader of Dimewars but this caught my attention. I bet Mr. Steele would not be worried about any cloudy lens if it were any of his family members that was being helped by Dr. Gupta. Dr. Gupta is a caregiver who happens to be a journalist and not a journalist who happens to be a caregiver. Sound to me like Mr. Steele is so caught up in his own hippocrasy(? spelling) that he forgets that we are all humans beings first. I would be curious about when Steele worked in the field reporting firsthand knowledge rather sitting in his mansion on the hill while others are doing the work.

What a jerk I think you are Bob Steele! At least the Dr's and media are providing better journalism, and humanitarianism!! I have to wonder if you'd feel the same way if that was you or your child in that rubble? I've always relied on Karma, and I see yours coming back around.
