Lauryn Hill Found Guilty On Tax Evasion
Acclaimed hip-hop artist Lauryn Hill took responsibility for failing to file three years of taxes on income of $1.8 million and pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges today in federal court.
The South Orange native could face up to three years in prison and $75,000 in fines for her offenses and will be sentenced in late November.
Hill's attorney Nathan Hockman said the star had been targeted by the federal government because of her celebrity status.
"There are many people in society who fail to file their taxes on time who only face civil liability," Hockman said. "They chose Ms. Hill in particular because of who she was."
Hill spoke little at her hearing today and stood attentively with her arms crossed in front of her chest when the judge first addressed her. She appeared in a white button-down shirt, blue blazer and long coral skirt.
She did, however, take issue with two statements made by U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp that she discussed in whispers with Hockman at length.
Hill raised her concerns with Hockman when the judge asked her if anyone had forced her to enter a guilty plea either directly or indirectly, and again when the judge ordered her to undergo mental health counseling as directed by pre-trial intervention services.
Through her attorney, Hill asked the judge to clarify what he meant by the words "directly" and "directed."
"Ms. Hill is very particular about language," Hockman said. "Language is very important to Ms. Hill."
Earlier this month, Hill posted a lengthy explanation for failing to file her taxes on a personal website. Hill wrote that she withdrew from society to keep herself and her family safe from pop culture's "climate of hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism."
Hill is not the first celebrity to run into tax trouble. Martha Stewart, Lindsey Lohan and Al Pacino have also been cited for failure to pay federal taxes.
Hill rose to fame as a member of the Fugees in the 1990s. Her debut solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," sold more than 10 million copies after its release in 1998 and won five Grammy awards.

Lauryn Hill Responds To Tax Evasion Charges
Singer Lauryn Hill says she hasn’t paid taxes since she withdrew from society to guarantee the safety and well-being of herself and her family.
Lauryn Hill has turned to the Internet to respond to federal tax evasion charges. Earlier this week, Atlanta Black Star reported that Lauryn Hill had failed to file federal tax returns in 2005, 2006, and 2007 having earned more than $1.8 million in the same period.
Now Ms. Hill has issued a response to the charges. In a lengthy letter posted on her Tumblr page, the 37-year-old singer claims to have removed herself and her family from society during those three years in order to “keep them safe, healthy, and free from danger.” Read her explanation below.
“For the past several years, I have remained what others would consider underground. I did this in order to build a community of people, like-minded in their desire for freedom and the right to pursue their goals and lives without being manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex with a completely different agenda. Having put the lives and needs of other people before my own for multiple years, and having made hundreds of millions of dollars for certain institutions, under complex and sometimes severe circumstances, I began to require growth and more equitable treatment, but was met with resistance. I entered into my craft full of optimism (which I still possess), but immediately saw the suppressive force with which the system attempts to maintain it’s control over a given paradigm. I’ve seen people promote addiction, use sabotage, black listing, media bullying and any other coercion technique they could, to prevent artists from knowing their true value, or exercising their full power. These devices of control, no matter how well intentioned (or not), can have a devastating outcome on the lives of people, especially creative types who must grow and exist within a certain environment and according to a certain pace, in order to live and create optimally.

Lauryn Hill's Ex Rohan Marley Proposes To Model Girlfriend
Lauryn Hill’s ex, Rohan Marley, partner of about 15 years who fathered five of her six children is set to marry Brazilian supermodel Isabeli Fontana.
The “Ex-Factor” singer’s ex has been dating the Victoria’s Secret model since October of last year after his split with Hill; right around the time when he tweeted he had not fathered the gorgeous singer’s sixth child.
While no tweet or word has come from the son of the reggae legend Bob Marley, the-soon-to-be-wife has confirmed the nuptials will most likely take place in Ethiopia, birthplace of Haile Selassie, the centerpiece of the Rastafarian religion.
“Rohan told me we have to return to the roots so the marriage will last forever,” the 28-year-old told Brazil’s Veja Magazine.
Rohan, who runs the Marley Coffee Company, has seven children, besides five with the “Nothing Even Matters” singer; the 39-year-old has two with his first wife, Geraldine Khawly while Fonatana has two children from previous marriages.
Though Isabeli, who was ranked as one of the world’s top earning models by Forbes in 2008, seems over the moon about her third marriage, her mother has some trepidation.
“I think everything is happening too fast, but everything has a different rhythm with Isabeli.”

Rohan Marley Moves On From Lauryn Hill With Model Chick
 If it wasn't clear before, it's pretty clear now. Rohan Marley and Lauryn Hill are no longer boyfriend/girlfriend/common law husband and wife....just parents to their five children.
When a picture surfaced of Rohan Marley with model Isabeli Fontana many were shocked and surprised - Lauryn Hill was pregnant at the time. Many wrongly assumed that Rohan was the father of Lauryn's child and accused him of abandoning her for "some white model chick". But Lauryn cleared up the rumor and perhaps tarnished her reputation in the process when she tweeted:
“Mr. Marley and I have a long and complex history… Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child. We have had long periods of separation over the years but out five children together remain a joy to both of us.”
Now that Rohan has moved on, he's showing off her new girl. Isabeli even tweeted recently,
“... I'm so happy I had the most amazing leg massage from my Ro last night... :)”

Lauryn Hill Talks The Making Of Her Classic '..Miseducation..' Album
 Lauryn Hill shed some light on her mind state when she recorded her classic album, 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. Lauryn told Reebork Classics Presents in a video interview,
"The 'Miseducation' was sort of a play on low and high culture coming together, what I intended to get across what there was a learning process of understanding that came from a non traditional way.
That album was going to be an embodiment of what a more formal paradigm would call uneducation or wouldn't acknowledge, but were in fact valuable life lessons."
If anything it was just about learning how to trust my individual voice, and I had some very strong ideas, and I was very strong about those, I felt strongly about those, so I was excited and once the momentum started going in a certain direction.
It was all about working out the kinks and continuing to do it. I was making this music I thought was beautiful and just making something contemporary that my generation could get excited about."

Lauryn Hill Hit With $20K Lawsuit For Abuse
Lauryn Hill is another case of an entertainer's erratic behavior costing them. Ms. Hill has become known in recent years for always arriving late, berating the crowd and her crew, giving poor performances and now for not paying her band mates.
In a new lawsuit filed by Jay Gore, Lauryn's guitarist from her 2007 European tour, more light is shed on what happens behind the scenes.
According to TMZ, Gore states in his lawsuit that Lauryn "exhibited the type of behavior for which she had gained public notoriety which contributed to a hostile work environment."
Gore says, "After shows, Hill would demand that the musicians and road support personnel attend meetings where she would engage in a person-by-person critique and berating."
He continues, "At one point, Hill made a statement in front of the tour personnel to the effect that 'I can't believe I am paying you fools, you should be paying me.'"
Jay Gore is asking for more than $20k. Lauryn Hill who gave birth to her sixth child last month appeared to have left that life behind, but now her past is coming back to hunt her.

Lauryn Hill didn't waste anytime getting back to work!! Ms. Hill gave birth to her sixth child last Saturday and has returned in fine fashion to perform at the L.A Rising Festival. L.A Times gave Lauryn's performance a great review, stating her vocals were strong and she commanded the stage. Contrary to the very scary images that have popped up of Lauryn Hill performing and her bizarre requests in the past, it's refreshing to see Lauryn bounce back so quickly. Lauryn Hill Releases Baby Pictures
Lauryn Hill has released some photos of her newborn baby boy. Lauryn gave birth to her sixth child, a baby boy, amidst a slew of paternity rumors. Rohan Marley, the father to Lauryn's first five children, started a media fire when he publicly noted he was not the father of Lauryn's sixth child. Rohan later re-stated his comments while not claiming paternity of the child but expressing his respect for Lauryn as the mother of five of his children.

Lauryn Hill Indirectly Confirms Rohan Marley Is Not The Father
Lauryn Hill welcomed her sixth child, a son, on Saturday (7.23.11) to a slew of speculation over the paternity of the child. Rohan Marley, the father of Lauryn's first five children caused an uproar when he implied last month that he was the father of Lauryn's sixth child. Lauryn remained quiet but decided yesterday to shed some light on her "complex" relationship with Rohan Marley.
Mr. Marley and I have a long complex history about which MANY inaccuracies have been reported since the beginning. To speculate without the facts can only cause people to form WRONG conclusions. We both value privacy and for that reason defend and preserve our right to it. Contrary to the numerous reports, Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child. We have had long periods of separation over the years but our 5 children together remain a joy to both of us. Lauryn Hill Gives Birth To 6th Child
 It was only in March that Lauryn Hill revealed she was pregnant when a baby bump was spotted beneath her flowing dress. Lauryn announced the news at the concert. A short time after, Lauryn's longtime partner Rohan Marley reportedly denied he had anything to do with Lauryn's pregnancy only to later claim his very explicit words were taken out of context.
Blackcelebkids are now confirming that Lauryn Hill has given birth to her sixth child.
“Mother and baby are fine,” says the source, who adds that Hill and family “had a little scare because the baby came out the womb with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. All is well now and everyone is happy.”
Rohan has been linked to Brazlilian model Isabeli Fontana. Congrats to Lauryn Hill on a healthy delivery. Time will tell who fathered Lauryn Hill's 6th child and whether Rohan has really moved on....

Lauryn Hill Needs To Be Addressed As "Ms. Hill"
 Lauryn Hill - Former Fugees front woman Lauryn Hill remains adamant on being referred to as "Ms. Hill". Hill performed recently at Sundance and according to sources Lauryn displayed some diva like behavior.
L-Boogie's management warned staffers at Harry O's in Park City, Utah, that she was only to be addressed as "Ms. Hill" during her Wednesday night performance.
"Everyone sort of rolled their eyes and chuckled but promised to oblige," said a source.
Despite it all, Lauryn Hill still rocked it out for two hours and reportedly had a great performance.
"She put on the best show I've seen in six years."

Lauryn Hill Return To The Stage Sparks Nostalgic Hopes
Former hip hop heavyweight, Lauryn Hill, only has one studio album under her belt, and that album - The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill - is over a decade old. Despite that, Lauryn Hill's name still echoes down the halls of hip hop royalty and resonates with millions of fans the world over. Lauryn Hill's self-imposed hiatus from the music industry has been somewhat of a conundrum in that her hardcore fans respect her decision to raise her children, while at the same time feel the void she left in music with her absence. Lauryn Hill Perform At Rock The Bells in LA yesterday - Video Included
Lauryn Hill performed at the annual Rock The Bells tour in LA yesterday.
According to MTV, Lauryn Hill "started with a can't-miss one-two punch of "Lost One" and "Doo-Wop (That Thing)." Backed by a six-piece band and three backup singers, just about all her selections were remixed variations of her classics, with the tempo sped up. This was not a woman who some reports had labeled "crazy." Lauryn was lucid and dancing and appeared to be enjoying herself... Hill ended where her career began -- with the Fugees -- rapping "Ready or Not" and "Fugee La." When she exited, an undercurrent of fans chanted "Lauryn, Lauryn!"

Wyclef Jean Trying To Get Lauryn Hill To Reunite Fugees For Haiti Relief Efforts
Wyclef Jean has been very vocal about reuniting the Fugees for almost a decade now, his attempts include the BET Awards, Dave Chapelle's block party and now for a concert he's promoting for the Haitian earthquake relief efforts. So far, reports are that Pras has already joined the fray and Wyclef is only looking for crooner Lauryn Hill to give the okay. LAURYN HILL's Former Bassist, Dewey Tucker Shot and Killed in Oakland, California
 LAURYN HILL's former bassist, Dewey Tucker has been
found dead in his car in Oakland, California. According to reports,
California police believe the 24 year old was en route to a practice
session when he was shot and killed. Dewey Tucker who also performed
for rap group The Coup is survived by his fiancee.

Wyclef Jean wants The Fugees To Reunite....Again!
 Despite the harsh words shared between each member of the former super group, Wyclef is still holding out hope that maybe his new project will help bring the group back together.
Here's what he told told DJBooth.net:
"Somehow The Fugees is the soundtrack to everyone's house. What I'm hoping is that this group really gets inspired by the new movement that I'm on right now, the new music that I've got coming out, the movement with the youth, and I'm hoping they'll get inspired and be like, 'Yo, let's find Clef and let's get this thing cracking.' And it would be an honour to go in and make it a super album."
This material must be pretty inspirational or Wyclef is just trying shamelessly to create some steam around his new project. Quite frankly I don't see it happening. If charitable events for your native country of Haiti hasn't done anything, I doubt a record will.

Wyclef Blames Lauryn Hill For Fugees Not Reuniting
Wyclef Jean was recently on radio talking the goods, the bads and the uglies of the fugees situation. As usual, he blames Lauryn Hill for EVERYTHING! Here's what Wyclef was saying about her:
"I was so young then, ya dig. There's one thing about me, I don't Suge Knight nobody, so if you feel like you can do it, you have to go ahead and do it. ... When I met Lauryn, she was 14, and till today I've never came across the same talent. She's the best rapper, she's the best singer... Inside the fugees I was what Will.I.Am is for the black eyed peas... To me the fugees getting back together is the trust factor. They gotta be willing to put their careers in my hands, and I got them..."

Lauryn Hill Cancels ALL European Tour Dates
 I had no plans on taking a trip to Europe to see Lauryn Hill perform but boy was I happy to know she was on the comeback trail! But, all of that changed when her reps informed the Stockholm Jazz Festival late Tuesday that all Lauryn's performances in Europe have been canceled. This includes shows in Sweden, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, and Austria. L-boogie was the headliner!! Somebody and a few fans are not happy right now.
Her reps cited health reasons for the cancellation but didn't provide any further details. Whatever it is I hope she gets it together.

The Comeback of Lauryn Hill?!
The comeback of Lauryn Hill….let’s hope so! Lauryn will be headlining the The Stockholm Jazz Festival, one of Sweden’s biggest music events for its July 2009 concert. The festival spokesman has confirmed that L-boogie will indeed perform at the five-day event which draws up to 30,000 people – a good look for Lauryn!
