Elena Dementieva Defeats an Injured Serena Williams in Sydney International final
Russia's tennis Star Elena Dementieva defeated Serena Williams 6-3 6-2 at the Olympic tennis center Friday to win the Sydney International on Friday. However, some sport analyst are suggesting her win is not as big as some media outlets are making it. They point to the fact that Serena Williams started the match with her knee already strapped and although she finished the match, she seemed distracted by the pain of her injury. According to Reuters, Serena "missed a string of shots she would normally make."
For her part Elena Dementieva seems to think that the injury was not a significant variable in the match. She was questioned and had this to say: "Question: Did you see her (Serena Williams) hobbling around on the leg a couple times in the first set, the left knee strapping? ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, (I) think everyone has something to deal with, yeah."
Looking ahead, Serena Williams after the match insisted that she will be fit to defend her Australian Open title despite her hobbling to defeat by Elena Dementieva.

Why is it that every time one of these sisters loses a match, they are supposedly injured in some way? I am so tired of hearing their sob stories!! Knee wrapped or not, I think she was just preparing her excuse for when she was annihilated in the match. They are old news and get on my nerves. They are the reason I have stopped watching women's tennis!!!!

Jennifer and Tim, Serena does not as you say "always" claim to have an injury after losing a match. She mentioned that her knee was bothering her; that is not equivalent to saying she lost because she is injured. In the interview afterward, Serena specifically said she did not want to discredit Dementieva, who she said played really well. I'm sick of people acting as though the Williams sisters are poor sports and liars when in fact they are passionate and talented players who are some of the most honest and well-meaning players in the WTA. Get over yourselves.

Anyone with half a brain can see that both Serena and Venus have faced unsurmountable challenges and have done so with no small amount of bravery and character. They are true American heroes and reflective of the values of our time. It is my hope that they both can see their own inner beauty and not let public opinion or "barbie" perfectionism keep them from enjoying their well earned fame and economic security. Serena is no champion, she is an average player these days whose strategy is to win a few slams a year to gain enough points so she didn't have to move her butt for the rest of the season and could sell all kinds of trash on shopping channels.
