Russell Simmons Thinks Hip Hop Can Save Black America
Rally in 2003
You don’t have to watch the news to know that there are a disproportionate number of black males in jail compared to their counterparts. This is because of the Rockefeller Drug Laws that carries mandatory long prison terms for small amounts of drugs. New York Governor has taken a major step further to abolish the law.
And now the New York Hip-hop spokesperson Russell Simmons had this to say,
"Ending the Rockefeller Drug Laws is a great victory for the hip-hop community. We worked hard, turned up the volume on this issue and rejuvenated and broadened the coalition, but it was hip-hop artists like Diddy, Jay-Z and 50 Cent that gave this movement for change the power to wake people up and to get the politicians to do the right thing."
I have a few questions here: When did the black community become the “hip-hop community” When did Jay-z, Diddy and 50 Cent use their multi-media platform to bring attention to the unfair policies of this law? Attending a rally does NOT even compare! I’m puzzled why Simmons continues to bring these hip-hop artists in particular to the forefront as though they are saviors of the community – give it up Russy – they don’t want the responsibility!

Can hip hop save this shitty economy? Can hip hop help people find jobs? Can hip hop help people afford healthcare? Can hip hop win the war on terror? Since the greedy government and the elite can't do these things for the American people, let me see hip hop handle these things i mentioned (And i love hip hop...the real hip hop)since it ended the Rockefeller drug laws.

hip hop isnt showing our black children that school is the best option, it isnt showing how we can change our communities, its not helping us grow as a people, it isnt showing us how to respect ourselves or our women....so hell no hip hop cant save black america...only thing that can save black america is us, not some industry that is fueled by white dollars. im a hip hop fan for life, but hip hop cant save black america like rock n roll cant save white america

@ Raymond - that's what I thought about hip-hop too! It's just a genre of music but I hear a lot of people directly associate the black american experience to hip-hop, is that true? Being from the caribbean that was a new concept for me to understand.

I THINK HIP-HOP CAN'T CHANGE ANYTHING IN THIS DAY AND TIME. THE MUSIC IS WATERED DOWN TO A POINT THAT ALL THE ARTIST ARE FAKE AND THEY'RE SELLING THEIR SOUL TO GET AIR PLAY. WE HAVE GOT TO KEEP THE MUSIC PURE. ARTIST NOW A DAY DON'T HAVE A MESSAGE FOR THE COMMUNITY. RAPPER LIKE JAY-Z AND 50 CENT SELL THEIR SOUL FOR MONEY AND THEY CONSTANTLY SENDING THE WRONG MESSAGE TO YOUNG BLACK KIDS. HY-STAKE----HY-STAKE GOT A MESSAGE FOR THE YOUTH AND HE IS MIXTAPE IS COMING REAL SOON LOOK OUT NYC, CT, FLA WORLD WIDE.

NO, RAP MUSIC IS DESTROYING BLACK AMERICA WIT ALL THESE WANNA BE NINO BROWNS AND BUBBLE GUM POP DANCE STEP TO THE LEFT CRAP. THESE RAPPERS ARE SO SELFISH, THEY ARE NOT THINKING ABOUT THE MESSAGE THEY ARE SENDING TO KIDS. LIKE NAS SAID HIP HOP IS DEAD. IT IS 100% COMMERCIALIZED. AND IN A TIME WHERE BLACK ON BLACK VIOLENCE IS RAMPANT, INCARCERATION RATE OF BLACK MEN IS THROUGH THE ROOF, AND OUT OF WEDLOCK BIRTHS ARE THE NORM, THE LAST MESSAGE KIDS NEED IS TO FUCK HOES, SHOOT NIGGAS, AND SELL BRICKS.
